It wasn't just a light. It was a functional shift light.

oops. my bad i thought you had it lit up constantly, i just realized you had made it a shift light too. nice

I'm just interested in having it just stay lit up. wondering what the process was to make the "Si" translucent enough to shine light through it

A scalpel and a steady hand. You have to:
    - remove the cluster trim
    - remove the cluster
    - remove the clear plastic cover
    - remove the needles (be sure to take all sorts of pics at idle, at reg temp and make sure it has a full tank).
    - remove the over lay
    - trim a section in the cluster for an LED, etc
    - wire it up
    - carefully scratch the paint from the back side of the si logo

    NP.

If you don't have patience then I wouldn't recommend you try it. There are multiple pieces that can easily break.
