link to bolt in cage from speed star? pm it to me please
also not chromoly and mig = woooonk good luck passing the newer stricter tech inspection at the tracks these days
i can name about three things that are not track legal on that cage
i once had a 592whp ep on pump gas, i sold it and bought a Z
(heed my advice i know what im doing)
what parts make it non track legal, post or pm me them please. any tips for future knowledge always helps
the door beams the angle looks out of regulation it should be lower or boxed int completely
mig welds arent even allowed by todays standards
and chromoly is the new standard that i have seen a requirement more and more each year
these are why the local 1200whp supra here in town cannot run at the local strip because of cage rules
cage building is an art and has very very strict rules it has to follow even for a 130whp econobox saturn if the case deems fit
i could go on about other stuff with the cage but hell even i havent read the whole rules on cage building
for example most legal cages that are used on a national level arent just thrown together certain weld joints have to be used as well as certain angles are not to be exceeded as it will break up in a roll and kill the driver
and when building a cage the cage must be inspected at certain levels of completeion in order for it to be NASA,SFWD,NHRA certified
but then again if all your running is test and tune and you manage to pull a 11.5 at the track they arent going to ask for a cert they will mearly just look in the car through the window to see if one is there before they ban your car
unlike the national supra
but the econobox ef civic that ran ten had nothing but a painted pvc fake cage int he car with tinted windows

i gotcha, luckily the tracks by me in ohio arent to strict. But yea its just a have fun car.
Awesome cage/bars. Lookin' good. :thumb:
for a bolt in cage that will meet spec...check out these guys...

You should have just built it like the Grassroots Civic cage, fully SCCA and NASA legal
Kirk Racing did it, http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/new...5/caged-in.php

jason- i dont have a link they use to have them under a thread before the delete. i think it was a 10 point bolt in certified cage like $1300
i cud be way off, i have a bad memory
http://www.scca.com/documents/Club%20Rules/GCR2008.pdf
The 2008 GCR (General Compitition rules) for the SCCA, Roll cage spec's start on page 93. Section 9.4
F. TUBING
1. Seamless or DOM mild steel tubing (SAE 1020 or 1025 recommended)
or alloy steel tubing (SAE 4130) must be used for all roll cage structures. Alloy and mild steel tubing may not be mixed. ERW tubing is not allowed.
2. The following table shows the minimum allowed tubing outer diameter and wall thickness by vehicle weight:
GCR Vehicle Weight
Tubing Size (inches)
(outer diameter x wall thickness)
Up to 1700 lbs
1.375 x .080
1701 - 2699 lbs
1.500 x .095
2700 lbs and up
1.750 x .095
If the tubing diameter used is at least .250 inch above the minimum diameter required, based on vehicle weight, the minimum wall thickness may be .080 inch.
3. The required tubing elements must meet the material minimums
set forth above. Optional tubing elements may be any size.
4. The minus variance of tubing wall thickness due to manufacturing
tolerances is limited to .010 inch.
5. An inspection hole between 3/16 and 1/4 inch diameter must be drilled in a non-critical area of the front and rear hoop as well as one of the supplemental braces to facilitate verification of wall thickness.
And they dont seem to care if its MIG or TIG welded
4. It is recommended that all joints of the roll cage be welded. All welding must include full penetration, no cold lap, no surface porosity, no crater porosity, no cracks, no whiskers, and so forth. Alloy steel must be normalized after welding. It is recommended that a certified AWS D1.1 welder do all welding.
So I don't know where your getting that info about TIG being required.... Seems to me that the only thing they are worried about is the tubing strength (based on vehicle weight) and that the welds fully penetrate the tubing and are clean.
Edit: Further research on the NHRA website has nothing about TIG welding requirements. just Roll cage minimums, similar to SCCA requirements. Same Deal in the NASA rule book.
EDIT #2, THE NHRA also does not require Chrome moly...
To quote the NHRA website
The roll cage must be constructed of minimum 1 5/8 o.d.x .118 mild steel tubing, or 1 5/8 x .083 chrome moly tubing, and must conform to the following diagram:

nice, but i would never do it to my car, its not a track car
That Autopower cage isn't going to be as good as a custom built cage. But if the Autopower cage was painted a wild color it would be good showcar bling bling. I would go custom, probably about the same price anyways.
Are some of you acid dipping your ep3's frame/shell before you put the cages in?
LOL @ weight reduction
