THe only good part about vinyl is that it's temporary.

I'd go with vinyl just so you can remove it if you desire.
this is the best DIY i've seen so far as most people leave their tail lights looking dull like a matte finish. if i may add my own two cents to the matter, some have suggested using a clearcoat as well. i would put this on after all the wetsanding of the niteshades, then wetsand the clearcoat. after that, continue with the DIY at the buffing portion.
note: apparently the tint becomes darker with the addition of the clearcoat, so if you choose to clearcoat your tail lights, be sure to make the niteshades portion a bit lighter (about 10-15% lighter) than what your final goal is.

I'd tint them with the film oppose to painting.
I paint and i hate tinting clear and spraying it on heads, tails, and side marker lights!
The problem isn't doing the job or the outcome it has alot to do with how dark or light someone wants the tint.
With the film u can remove it no prob if it's too light or dark for your taste but when its painted on its a pain to redo to your liking.
Also ya gotta fig whats easiest to fix if 5-0 doesn't approve depending on where u live.
back in the day the 04-05 owners would red out the tail lights
bad pic but you get the point
I started doing them and Didn't like the matte finish so I just darkened them a bit. I might follow that wet sand tutorial and finish them/
