So I was driving home this afternoon from Road Atlanta on I-85, riding beside a truck on the left, when suddenly something hit my car. Something big and something going much slower than 70mph. I think that a retread came off the trailer or was thrown up in the air as the trailer ran over it, but as you can see, whatever it was did a lot of damage for rubber. Also, there's no rubber marks anywhere that I saw. Either way, I'm ok and the car's at a shop in Spartanburg SC near where the incident happened and about an hour from where I live. My insurance will cover it. When my mom picked me up we drove back by where it happened and all's I saw was retread; anyone think a piece of rubber could do this much damage?

Well atleast you are okay.. if you watch this mythbusters episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqw4ZooBzLw they showed that a tire belt could decapitate your head.
It was a retread that attacked your poor ep, a big one.

wow thats heavy. I'd reckon a tire could do that if you hit it at the right angle, which it looks like you did....good thing your ok dude....musta taken some steady hands after that to get home
Haha, I just drove it about a quarter mile or so to a gas station for some shade. I had my mom drive the 45 minutes from home to come pick me up. Steady hands or not, the car isn't safe to drive like that.

Danggg, glad to hear you're safe bro.
Sorry to hear about the ep, but luckly it's being covered, and being fixed right away.
But sadly I'm certain that a piece of rubber can do this.
Rubber is very thick actually.
It has dense mass to it, so when it is hit, it compresses very little to its most dense state.
Where as something like a cardboard box has "crumble points" which breaks down the force of impact, making the initial hit much more bearable.
Seriously, take a look at the mythbusters episode that Polish Thug just posted.
Just watched it.
The outcomes pretty epic
I had a friend whom owned a 1992 toyota mr2 with a nice j-spec 3sgte in it. He was driving behind a semi truck and the tread separated and busted his window just like yours, crushed the a-pillar just like yours and he said he almost went off the highway as the force of that impact was so great it moved the car with him doing 70+
Well, I guess that's the only + for our cars being so freakin' heavy.
Thats nuts! Glad to hear you are ok!

Damn man that sucks. But yea rubber can definitely do that.
Glad to know you are okay. Looks like that very easily could have come in the car with you.
wow... kinda makes anyone who reads this thread think twice to tailgate a trailer for draft reasons...
crap. I'm glad your okay and didn't loose control or anything.
holy shit dude.... a few more inches to the your right and this could of turn out really bad for you.
