Alright so previous owner of my car painted the stock wheels black and I want to go back to silver. My question is, if I take the aircraft paint stripper to them, will it take off just the black paint or will it strip off the coating on the stock wheels as well?
Basically, will I HAVE to repaint the stockers afterwards or will just stripping the paint off be enough? Any input would be great. Thanks!
I think the aircraft paint stripper will take the factory clear coat and paint off, too. If they did a careful job painting the wheels, they should have sanded the factory paint job lightly before painting, too. With a higher quality paint, if they used it for the black, it probably bonded with the factory paint. If the black is flaking off, you might be able to remove it without chemicals, but I doubt it.
In other words, I think you have to start over with the paint job.

You will need to repaint, I highly doubt the original paint will survive, not too mention the original paint could have been damaged prior to the black paint. Best to sandblast them down and start all over, they will look worlds better.

That's what I was afraid of. The paint job is not done properly, and its def. not a very good quality job. I was trying to avoid having to bring them somewhere and have them painted, so I may go ahead and possibly try to do it myself. Or I guess I could look into powdercoating, but I really didn't want to pay for mounting and dismounting the tires.
I personally would just buy new wheels.. they wont ever look factory fresh anymore and I just dont think the cost would be worth the results.. just my 2 cents.
I've seen some good results with DIY wheels. The trick is to be patient... light sanding before painting (fill chips first), and LIGHT dusting of each coat of paint... each coat should not completely cover up the lighter primer underneath. Then, light sanding with very fine grit sandpaper in between clear coats. There used to be a DIY on here, but I think it was lost in a crash. Someone with more experience painting should give a more complete DIY!
i had good results on mine. first give them a full nice sanding. dont use very rough grit paper because the scratches will show through the paint. stick with like 300 grit then 600. then three light coats of primer followed by another very light sanding. then four light coats of color (i used duplicolor), then four light coats of clear. it turned out really good and i have only one small chip after 8 months, which happened on the first day. (i was inpatient and didnt let them fully dry before driving on them) paint you center caps as well in the same method. Order honda center cap H stickers in what ever color you want from www.grfxpstore.com and wala. i know it seems like allot of coats but remember that each coat should be very light. wait about 5 min between coats of the same paint and about 45 min between primer/color/clear.
mine were black too. if you wanna go cheap and have a quality look. i suggest, fine sanding it or air craft remover either way up to you, then wash em, dry em. next apply a can of light grey primer then get yourself a can of silver paint and use alot of clear coat. good luck. if your prep work is good then it should turn out like this.....
The Stripper will eat throught the black and take some of the stock with it.
If you do it, I used the stuff from home depot and it stripped the wheel fairly easy.

Paint is not durable it will chip. Just moving it around put a nick in the paint. :(
But it was a test wheel so no biggie. Actually thinking of getting rid of it.
Brake dust will etch away at the paint.

Did you do this with the tires still mounted? If it comes to dismounting, painting and remounting thats going to make it a little more effort then I think I want to do and I will look into new wheels, I just really want to stick with the OEM ones as this is my DD and I am trying to keep it mostly stock.mine were black too. if you wanna go cheap and have a quality look. i suggest, fine sanding it or air craft remover either way up to you, then wash em, dry em. next apply a can of light grey primer then get yourself a can of silver paint and use alot of clear coat. good luck. if your prep work is good then it should turn out like this.....
I tend to wash my wheels at least every week because I hate it when they get the darker brake dust color. so I am hoping that will prevent that.
yes the tire is mounted on, if you apply tape around the rim then mask it off with newspaper. you should be fine.

Awesome. As soon as it starts to warm up here, I will probably venture out and try to repaint the stockers. Worse case, I will go get them powdercoated if I need to, but really not trying to put that much money into it.
