Results from Magnetic Drain Plug for Transmission Oil

I recently changed out my transmission oil at roughly 60k miles. I had put in a magnetic drain plug at approximately 30k miles (3-4 yrs ago). I found some shavings on the magnetic tip. The oil was pretty dark.

I also did my engine oil change earlier and did see some shavings, but I forgot to take pics. The engine oil didn't have as much as the tranny. The tranny oil had 30k miles where as the engine oil only had 5k miles.

It looks like a lot of metal, and sort of has me concerned. I do remember grinding a little bit, but it's not like I abuse my transmission. I don't do any sort of racing/tracking, and the tranny seems to be operating just fine.

The last pic is after I wiped everything off and tried to pick up the shavings from the towel.

Total mileage for the car and transmission is just over 60,4xx miles. This is the second transmission oil change; 1 at 30k, and the second just yesterday at 60k.

The transmission sounds and feels fine. I was expecting to see some metal shavings, but was really surprised to see that much.

Just wanted to share with people what and how much comes out of the oil.

Brass and crabon arent magnetic mate....

I just pulled a used transmission apart for a rebuild that i got from a scrap yard. they say its got 170 000km on it (approx 105 000miles) and there is average wear on the internals. The majority of the gear wear is on reverse. They are very large spur cut gears and we all know a crunch going into reverse now and again is the norm. Thats what i would venture a guess that your metall bits are mostly from.

Also, it could be from the dog teeth on the gears themselves. On the transmission i have opened up 2nd and 3rd gear especially have slightly rounded tips on the dog teeth.

Also, this may worry you even more. there is a large magnet inside the transmission that will be totally covered and your drainplug magnet is only picking up the scraps. Sleep well. lol
