DIY: Trunk mat 30$

Ok so i am sure i am not the only soul out there that has bought a used car only to find the trunk carpet and plywood gone. Well my EP3 was that way. The interior was so nice until you got to the bare trunk. It was a big eye sore every time i was back there so i decided to do something about it.


Here is what i got.

7/16IN 4ft x 8ft OSB - $6.55
36" Corrugated black runn - $10.84 (like 2something per ft)
16.6 oz 3M Super spray adhesive - $12.98


I have a kid on the way so i knew it would be getting used alot and banged on by strollers and what not i also have pets so i counted in easy fur removal also. I decided to go with a corrugated Vinyl/Rubber material to take the beating still look good and also a easy cleanup.

Step 1: Make a template of you trunk area that you wish to cover. Make sure you take your time so you do not end up with odd gaps and lines.(I DID...lol) I used cardboard. Mine is a sad excuse please excuse lol


Step 2: Trace your template on the wood you are using and carefully cut out the shape. I had originally planned to cut the nice curves as well to fill all the trunk. I only have a table saw to cut with so that went out the window. Now if you do decide to do this you will have to cut the separate from you main body of wood. If you do not it will be to wide to fit in the trunk anyway you try to go at it.


Step 3: Test Fit to make sure you do not need to make any adjustments. If so do them now. Remember that depending on what material you use your fitment will get tighter. So it is best that the wood not be a "snug" fit w/o the material.

Step 4: Once you are dose test the fitment and are happy with it, its time to move on to you material. I sprayed the adhesive thickly to both the wood and vinyl and let them sit for about to min. Then i started to wrap the they vinyl to the board focusing only on the top and not the sides just yet.

I used a big piece of wood that was cut off to lay on top squishing them together and sat of them for about 10 min smoking and surfing the web. (Now if you plan to use the side curved parts you will lay them were they need to go beside your board about a 1/4 away to give room for flex and apply you material over them along with you board. It should be one piece of material connecting all 3 piece's of wood.) After 10 min i got up and checked to see how well it applied and i wasn't to happy at the time but realized the longer it sits the better it gets. Even if the bottle says just 10 min.. You will have to make cuts at every corner to get a flush fit all the way around.

After i thought i was holding good enough i flipped it over and started to trim the excess material off leaving about a inch 1/2 - 2 inch's all the way around. Make sure you take your time cutting because i got a little ahead of myself as you can see in the bottom of the second pic. Now this was my first time wrapping or any sort of upholstery work. So bare with me i know its not the best but i am pleased with my first try. (



Step 5: Install and admire your handy work!



Here you can see were the corner pieces should would be. Its not beautiful but it looks a hell of a lot better than it did!


Sorry if there is already a DIY on here to do this. I didnt look to see. But if there is oh well lol here is ANOTHER!

I thought you were going to carpet it like a box. I bet someone who did car audio installs could make one of these for cheap.

No you could probably get carpet for around the same price I didn't want to tho. This stuff is more durable and I have pets also and trying to get every bit of fur out pf carpet is a pain. With this I don't have to worry about it. Also I don't have to worry about it getting stained.
