I'm changing a ball joint on the driver side. The axle came out. It seems to go back in but the axle boot seems stretched. How do i know if it's in all the way or not?

It feels like it goes in and when I turn it the transmission feels connected but the boot looks stretched.. What should the boot look like?
Did the boot possibly slide from it's original position? I had one pop out and it went back in in about 30 seconds. Another time it took close to an hour to get back in.
It seemed like the axle was in place so I decided to re-assemble. Once I started lining things up and bolting them together the boot went right back to normal. I guess it was just the position of the axle before I got everything lined up.
