    Frustrations

Two years ago I had Autofair Honda replace 2nd gear in my Z3 6-speed. Replaced the TOB with a Honda branded part. Retained the old clutch...well, not 2 years later(didn't even drive the car last winter), and 1st gear pops out. Recently 2nd gear grinds going in, or like my drive home, wont go in at all unless at idle.

Autofair looks at the car again, allegedly drives it around, can't diagnose the issue. The tech, who's a nice guy, and supposedly their most experienced, first troubleshot it as the wrong shifter cables, or a bad shifter. Both the shift cables(Honda) and shifter(BCSS) were replaced and had only been used for the drive down to Autofair. He spends time reinstalling and inspecting the shifter.

Finally, he dropped the transmission, found that a wing of the TOB was sheared off. No idea why that happened. No idea how I'd know that had happened, as by the time I was seeing symptoms, the damage was done. The lack of a TOB caused the mainshaft bearings to wear, and now the case is ruined and the mainshaft has play. They then wanted a total of $4k for all the work.

I said no, and went to get my car. Apparently between dropping it, installing my clutch, installing a stainless clutch line, and troubleshooting, the tech spent 12 hours with my car. $1200. What's interesting is that he called me, and asked me about the cables/shifter less than an hour before the service rep called to tell me that the tech had found mainshaft play and that there was nothing they could do outside of replacing it.

So, if he was able to diagnose the mainshaft play while it was on the vehicle, why the hell did he drop the damn transmission?! 12 hours!? It took me, by myself, with only jacks and jackstands, 2.5 hours to drop the transmission. On top of that, when I went to remove the transmission-engine bolts, they weren't even torqued down! Neither was the drivers side engine mount bolt! Took maybe 1-2 ft-lbs to break them free. Ugh... Now I get to spend MORE money on a transmission.

    I love this car...but sheesh.

Everybody makes mistakes but that is ridiculous. I wouldn't go back to those clowns.
