    HOW IS THAT SO HARD??
haha, no wonder you're so bent out of shape about the welding! you don't understand the benefit!

okay, the reason for the weld is b/c by cutting off the downpipe leading into the cat, which is a good 8"-12" long, borla's engineers were able to lengthen the primaries of the header, thus allowing them to get more favorable resonance effects.

so it's not like they can just put a flange on the end, b/c there is no corresponding flange at the mouth of the cat. Remember, on our cars the header comes together and into the downpipe (which is actually an e-pipe) and then into the cat. The downpipe is WELDED to the cat. If there was a flange there, I'm certain borla would have put a flange there.

But if you really want a flange, you could get one done custom ;) for a bit extra. Just tell them to put a flange at the mouth of the cat, and put a flange on the end of the borla header. viola you have a flange.

But what's the big deal anyhow? The borla header is a 2 piece, so the cat will still drop out with relative ease with the 2nd half of the borla header welded to it.

and btw, the reason why the intake is so expensive is b/c it's a one off. If you've ever made a one off of anything, you know that it's way more expensive than mass production. Once my intake is prototyped and tested on my car, if the dyno results are favorable, I might see about having a lot of 20 or so units produced. that would hedge the costs down to about the cost of most cai's

    thats on Borla.com

now when i talked to the guys @ 21st century, i think that there were so many inquires about the header (cause of all of us) that they either found out that they were getting low balled on the header, or they jacked up their price, cause when i called back up for the group buy...they said that they would give us the group buy @ 297 because the old price, (i think of 280 w/o group buy) was incorrect...
