Why is the 2002 Si so heavy?

Hi, First post. Long story short, I'm going to buy a 2002 Si very soon since I saw one and can't get over how nice it looks. I kinda like the fact that it is a bit heavy since it felt so much more solid when I test drove it, however I just wanted to know what is it that makes it so heavy for such a small car? Is it easy to lighten up? Thanks. Love this forum.

air con, moonroof, power windows, power locks, denser metals in the chassis to stiffen it up....oh, and that giant hood! :p

Stingyboy's right. The 2002 Si weighs more than my first Accord. A lot of that weight goes into making it more crashworthy. I guess that's a good thing, but it's one of the reasons that the '90 Civic Si I owned, which weighed about 500 pound less, remains my all-time favorite car. Except for the sunroof which came w/the car, it had none of the other items Strinyboy listed. Didn't even have a radio! But it was a neat car because it was so simple a machine.

LOL, Not buying it from jail. Yeah, I guess it is a good thing that it's more crash worthy. I'm still gonna try to lighten it up a couple hundred pounds though. Gotta go get it first (still waiting on my current car to be signed over to the new buyer, don't wanna trade in and get nailed!).

I think a good chunk of the weight comes from all the extra support they added to the chassis. The EP is 95% stiffer torsionally than the previous hatches. I'm sure they had to beef up the frame to get such results.

You cant ignore the fact that it is a physically larger car than previous gen civic hatches. Park beside a 4th gen and notice the height difference.
My RSX is something like 3" taller than the 3rd gen teg.

Both the RSX and Si are tall as hell. But its heavy mostly for crash reasons. So what the weight adds a half second to your quarter mile, at least if u get in a crash your chances of not getting seriously hurt are considerably lower

Just checked some numbers at carpoint.com...
compared to the 88-91 hb, the 02 is:
    -more than 12" longer (7.8%)
    -more than 4" taller (8.0%)
    -about 1" wider (1.7%

    1.078 x 1.017 x 1.08 = 1.184 (i.e by these rough outer dimensions, the '02 is 18.4% larger than the 88-91 by volume).

    2744/2161 = 27% heavier.

If you took out airbags, abs, and all the "bells & whistles" that didnt exist in 1988, I would guess that it would be closer to 18% heavier.

Dont know where you heard that, but its wrong.

    '92, '93 Si: ~2325 lbs
    '94, '95 Si: ~2375 lbs
    '02 Si: ~2744 lbs
