So are stock Honda wheels all aluminum or what?
I'm feeling a bit sketchy now after reading this about my set of spare 05-06 DC5-S wheels that are powdercoated white sitting in my garage...
Interesting info. This topic has been argued for many years. I personally think it is more of a liability concern for wheel makers. From what I've read, BBS and others use powder coat primer and clear coats. If you are concerned about your wheels do some more searching, there are valid arguements on both ends of the spectrum. http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=151053
Personally I've got about 3 years on my RSX blades with no problems and many stress load/ heat cycles. With that said- these RSX wheels were $10. each. I would certainly think twice about powder coating high end exotic wheels.
I know that I have beaten the living shit out of powdercoated aluminium wheels on motorcycles for years, and never had an issue, this is after beating them with tire irons and all manner of whatnot, replacing bearings multiple times, and all kinds of beating and wear on the powdercoated aluminium wheels and never had or seen anyone have an issue.
I also know a guy that restores wheels and he powder coats them even after welding them per customer request, I have never seen him paint a set of wheels. and IM talking about wheels like Work and Rays Engineering.
I guess I really cant speak otherwise for car wheels cause I personally have never had a set powder coated, but I know a crap ton of people who have their rims powder coated, and this is the first I have ever heard of a problem with powder coating aluminum.
not saying that there isnt some risk, but I havent ever seen it, or heard of it, and every time I go to the powder coater, theres a crap load of fresh rims waiting to be picked up.
interestingly it seems that the majority of good powdercoaters will bake at a lower temperature so as not to overlap the aging process, also, with non forged rims or thick stock rims, it shouldnt matter, at least thats what my limited research is saying.
just google: powder coating aluminum rims
I was rather surprised upon hearing it. This is specifically for 6061-T6 aluminum wheels. Maybe 949 Racing intentionally had them overheated to suggest that some treatments were not applied correctly? Dunno.
