I did this a few months ago with black felt that matches the interior of the car.
I laughed when I saw your solution for making the widest part of the floor fit was the same as mine: slice them off and use the carpet as a hinge lol.
This is a great idea as our spare tire covers are garbage and can support almost no weight.

Did you get the same moment of "Uh... this doesn't work" like I did? The possibilities are endless... hinges to allow access to storage underneath can go in many spots! I really like the idea of building my sub box into the trunk, then something like this on top of it. I may try that this summer when I have more time!

It's not too bad if you trace the carpet the way I did. You can cut 1/8 of an inch inside your line. If you don't have the carpet, use cardboard to make a template. Trimming and fitting cardboard is easier than wood, then when you switch to wood you have less fitting to do.

Thanks for all the positive feedback, folks!

Good stuff, I like the custom rails to hold it in place. I think whenever I get around to doing mine I will remove my spare and counter sink the sub on the floor board to get back my trunk space.

    cool

good writeup, that board would serve as a good base to make a nice custom hatch enclosure.

but u must be concerned about weight. how much does that piece of wood weigh in itself?
