yes too much can hurt your engine!
do you check the oil level with the dipstick?
Is it bad that when i change my oil, I put in 5 qts instead of 4.25 or watever our engine takes? Can too much oil hurt your engine?

i'll check it before a long trip and every now and then, and when i fill up my gas. I guess I'll start putting the correct amount and just add oil as needed.
You can hurt your engine by filling it overfull, but 5 quarts is not likely to do it.
5 quarts wont do anything, I put in 5 quarts all the time, i hate having left over oil laying around.
as long as you are checking your oil and making sure it isnt an inch and a half over the second hole in the stick....
thanks for the input guys. how much oil does it take to fill up our car? is 4.35 qts or something?
With a full change including filter I usually use 5.25-5.5 quarts. The first time I did a full change I put 4.5 and noticed it was on the very low mark on the dipstick. I was worried it would hurt it adding too much but ever since I've used a little less than 5 or a regular change and a little over for a full and never had a problem.
i use about 4.5 quarts. Being over is worse than being low.
book says 4.4 quarts but yea i just put in 4.5
try sucking up foamy beer through a straw. thats what your engine is trying to do, well, beer in your engine is kinda unorthodox haha. But the crankshaft can hit the oil, foaming it up and causing the oil pump to pick up the air bubbles trapped in the oil, causeing a low film strength which can lead to metal to metal contact = not fun
but doesnt the oil pickup happen at the BOTTOM of the oil, which, if you have enough oil, will be well below the foamy buildup? and if the crankshaft is hitting the oil then it's sure lubed well enough. and then, well, we all know that our engines love to burn oil....
i use 5 quarts last week didnt do anything yet
